On a recent trip I had a chance to view Smash His Camera – a documentary on celebrity paparazzi Ron Galella. Street photographers probably know Ron’s name – the 80-year-old Galella has been shooting since the 1950s and has had a colourful career. People love him, more people hate him – his work has been exhibited in the Museum of Modern Art and Tate Modern in London.
The film is an interesting look at Galella. He had his jaw broken in a dust-up with Marlon Brando and spend time in court over his photographing Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis. He is the original paparazzi – going to great lengths to capture celebrities. He’s hidden in bushes, crashed parties, and chased the rich and famous around New York City.
Whether you agree with his methods of not the film Smash His Camera is a must-see for photography buffs. Ron Galella has captured some amazing moments – a parasite or a visionary is for you to decide.
